Windmill Series
The Windmill series was a means of including myself in the conversations of art periodicals. I did not see any hint of my perspective or the influences of my peers. I wasn’t just marginalized; I was not even on the page.
I was also confronted with ageism in the art world. It is no longer emerging, so no longer relevant.
With art periodicals in hand and the cliché of “tilting at windmills,” I pushed to be included and create my own conversation.
Through cut-and-paste of the periodicals, with a specific focus on an article within, I formed free-floating assemblages of flat work that were no longer following the troupe of canvas on a frame. The assemblages formed the angled blades of the windmill that symbolized “welcome.”
I am interrupting the message the text and images convey. Patterns that form create a rhythm across the surface, like looking at snow on a monitor. At first sight, a fizzing field of gray; when focused, patterns swirl across the surface, forming confused or chaotic information.
Abstract gestures are added to the surface with acrylics in various combinations. The actions of the acrylics enhance, contrast, and/or obliterate the surface of the assemblages.
